As part of the Culture of Outports initiative, ERA’s Andrew Pruss, Alana Young, and Jordan Molnar are heading to Botwood Newfoundland from Feb. 15 to 22. Together with a group of Ryerson Architecture students, we’ll be collaborating with the community on a number of events, as well as the design and construction of an intervention in the local landscape.""

Botwood, today a town of 3000, was a significant settlement for the Beothuk people, and became a major point of settlement for Europeans. The town has served as a major port of trade (both air and ocean), and was an important base for the RCAF during WWII.

The Culture of Outports program uses research, planning, and design to inspire livable communities facing economic and cultural change after the decline of the Northern Cod Fishery. The aim is to build on both the tangible and intangible heritage of communities to connect youth with elders and to design new spaces for activity and exchange.

""

Culture of Outports projects have already been completed to acclaim in Burlington (2011), Brigus (2012); and Port Union, Nfld. (2013). These projects involved the construction of small-scale designs to provide a sense of place, draw traffic to particular sites, and provide new framing for social and micro-economic activity.
