Today it rests on a concrete slab and two concrete columns, suspended five storeys over solid ground. A new 50-storey condominium designed by architectsAlliance incorporates the John Irwin House into its podium.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the development, the heritage exterior will be restored while the interior will be refurbished and adapted to commercial use. The suspension of the house on its \u201cfloating raft\u201d allows crews to excavate below while the house remains in use as the site office. This unusual feat is the result of a rare collaboration between heritage architects (us), structural engineers (<a href=\"http:\/\/astint.on.ca\/\">Jablonsky Ast<\/a>), geostructural engineers (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.isherwood.to\/\">Isherwood<\/a>), and building movers (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mccullochmovers.ca\/\">Laurie McCulloch<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"More...\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.era.on.ca\/blogs\/office\/wp-includes\/js\/tinymce\/plugins\/wordpress\/img\/trans.gif\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.era.on.ca\/blogs\/office\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/104701_130319_03.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"104701_130319_03\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.era.on.ca\/blogs\/office\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/104701_130319_03-500x375.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The moving of houses, always a methodical and careful process, is a practice that occurs more often than most people realize, and has a history dating back to at least the 1700s.
