In their latest issue <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nxtbook.com\/naylor\/CSLQ\/CSLQ0216\/index.php#\/0\">(Vol. 18, No. 2)<\/a>, the article <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nxtbook.com\/naylor\/CSLQ\/CSLQ0216\/index.php#\/26\">\u201cActive Praxis, Hybrid Practice,\u201d written by Shelley Long<\/a>, takes a look into the new hybrid practices found in landscape architecture, in both teaching-based and business-based environments, wherein academics and professionals are experimenting with interdisciplinary thinking to formulate new ideas, inspire innovation, and move the profession forward.<\/p>\n<p>Teaching-based professionals included Marc Boutin from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-mbac.ca\/#\/home\">Marc Boutin Architectural Collaborative (MBAC)<\/a> in Calgary, Alissa and Pete North from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northdesignoffice.ca\">North Design Office<\/a> of Toronto, and Dietmar Straub and Anna Thurmayr from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.landschaftsarchitektur-heute.de\/projekte\/details\/2187\">Straub + Thurmary Landschaftarchiteken<\/a> of Winnipeg. These individuals integrate their academic research into their landscape architecture practice to inform new methods and engage the public. <em>Texture City<\/em> (MBAC), <em>Core Sample<\/em> installations (North Design Office, 2006), and the Folly Forest project (Straub + Thurmayr Landschaftarchiteken) are all excellent examples of academic risk-taking and interdisciplinary innovation.<\/p>\n<p>Business-based research and innovation relies on a creative office culture that supports and promotes interdisciplinary research and experimentation. Firms that encourage this experimental approach include ERA Architects, located in Toronto, Montreal, and Prince Edward County, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.claudecormier.com\/en\/\">Claude Cormier + Associ\u00e9s<\/a> (CC+A) in Montreal, and <a href=\"http:\/\/hapacobo.com\">the Hapa Collaborative<\/a> in Vancouver. Each of these firms has advanced the field of landscape architecture through collaborative projects and community-based initiatives. For example, ERA has worked with community members to establish the non-profit group <a href=\"http:\/\/www.friendsofallangardens.ca\/#!\/\">Friends of Allan Gardens (FOAG)<\/a>, and helped organize, alongside <a href=\"http:\/\/jrstudio.ca\">Janet Rosenberg and Studio<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/tclf.org\">The Cultural Landscape Foundation<\/a>, the first-ever conference in Canada on cultural landscapes. ERA also helped in the administration of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.towerrenewal.com\">Tower Renewal project<\/a>, which began as a thesis and is now a forceful project that will transform the future of Toronto\u2019s tower neighbourhoods.
