Windward West Island Compound

Elevation Drawing of the Craigleith Chalet property

Located on an outer island within the Georgian Bay Archipelago, ERA was tasked with developing a small-scale master plan for this undeveloped five-acre island to evoke a sense of togetherness while offering distinctly private accommodations for visiting guests. The family compound includes a 3,000 square-foot main cottage, serving as the central hub and reception space for all guests, along with three complementary bunkies strategically nestled within the landscape. A supporting sauna and gym will enhance the compound, providing comfort and functionality in this unique, remote setting.

The architectural language of the compound draws inspiration from the region’s traditional cottage typology. Low-lying pitched rooflines and locally sourced materials — brought to the site by boat — are integral to the design. Heavy timber framing forms the structure and defines the spaces within, serving as the canvas for the interiors. A carefully selected material palette has been chosen to quiet the exteriors, allowing the buildings to blend harmoniously with the surrounding landscape.

The main cottage is designed to capture water views from every angle. Expansive glazing has been incorporated throughout to create a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor living, offering the perfect, protected vantage point for watching wild summer storms sweep across the Bay.
