Waawaatesi
Waawaatesi, which means “firefly” in Anishinaabemowin, is a vibrant new public park coming to 229 Richmond Street West. The winning design was selected from a two-stage design competition and evaluated by a jury of experts in landscape architecture, architecture, urban design, art, curation, climate resilience, and Indigenous design. The Jury’s decision was also informed by public input and comments from a City of Toronto Steering Committee and Community Advisory Group. Construction completion is anticipated for the end of 2027.
The new park will transform the surface parking lot into a dynamic and inclusive space that celebrates the cycle of life, healing, and the passage of time. The design integrates landscape, light, and performance to create unique visitor experiences. Waawaatesi will serve as a cultural hub, featuring a curated calendar of arts events and installations reflecting traditional myths through contemporary mediums.
As consultants specializing in cultural heritage and public engagement, ERA’s role is to support the team by facilitating on-the-ground engagement, creating opportunities for meaningful community involvement throughout the project, and ensuring that the voices of residents and Indigenous communities are heard and incorporated into the final design.
