Two Blokes Cider Barn
Transforming existing farm infrastructure into a rural destination
Two Blokes Cider is a small-scale, farm-based craft cidery located just north of Port Perry, Ontario. ERA was engaged as Prime Architect to reimagine and repurpose an existing five-bay pole barn into a tasting room and production facility, supporting the processing of apples grown in the 100-year-old orchard adjacent to the building, a true farm-to-table initiative.
ERA navigated a complex approvals process to convert the existing 3,500 sq. ft. agricultural storage barn into a hybrid space accommodating retail, production, and storage. The building now serves as an anchor and destination within a broader network of diversified uses on the farm. It has also become something of a catalyst in the rural region, demonstrating to other local farmers what is possible through the adaptive reuse of existing assets.
The original structure was a simple, traditional five-bay pole barn, a large open shed for storing agricultural equipment and tractors. The existing dirt floor was replaced with an insulated concrete slab, chosen for both its functional performance and refined material presence. Strategic punctures through the original corrugated metal skin were carefully introduced to create moments of arrival and entry into the repurposed building.
A prominent aperture bay window seat frames views of the orchard, reinforcing a direct visual connection between the landscape and the production facility. This gesture serves as a constant reminder to visitors that the product they are experiencing is grown and crafted on site, strengthening the relationship between place, process, and experience.
