The York Club Renovation
Since 2019 ERA has worked closely with one of Toronto’s oldest private clubs. ERA brought its multivalent expertise to provide full architectural services for the renovation, accessibility upgrades and kitchen expansion of Waveney, the historic (and heritage designated) Romanesque Revival Gooderham Mansion, home of the York Club.
ERA worked closely with the Club’s Renovation Planning Committee (RPC) and General Manager to understand the challenges around existing operations and to observe traditional patterns of use. This analysis informed the scope for improved functionality and provided clear planning options for enhanced member experiences. ERA’s mandate was to always centre the preservation of the Club’s traditions, like fine dining, the enjoyment of its cherished historic interiors, and improved accessibility writ large. The proposed expansion will provide modernized kitchen facilities, storage and staff functions, while upgraded and accessible washroom facilities, especially for women club members are proposed for within the club’s historic walls. An enhanced landscape design for the exterior courtyards and gardens was delivered by ERA’s in-house landscape team.
ERA and the RPC presented regularly to the Club’s membership to update on progress and obtain feedback. This ensured that the design process was inclusive, and that stakeholders were involved in a meaningful way for best outcomes.
This project employed the full range of ERA’s expertise: historically sensitive, contextual design, functional programming, accessibility upgrades, historic conservation, landscape architecture and seamless co-ordination amongst Toronto’s finest consultants, whose close collaboration was essential for the success of such a complex project. The Club is scheduled to reopen to refreshed interiors and expanded dining facilities in late 2025.
