Sauna Sanctuary

Nordic-style saunas are a fixture of Canadian cottage life. They inspire physical and mental wellbeing in their users and offer an increasingly rare luxury: a private wellness retreat in which one might completely disconnect from the modern world’s distractions.

ERA was pleased to work closely with the owner of a private island to design a simple, minimalist sauna that would visually fit with their island’s existing architecture. The resulting custom-built refuge is tucked into the island’s pine trees, providing a cozy enclosure on three sides, and sweeping water views on its fourth.

The building’s prefinished wood channel cladding and the standing seam metal roof provide a rustic and utilitarian complement to the more traditional shingle finishes of the main dwelling. To focus occupants’ attention on the lake-facing views, the owner selected clear light-coloured thermally treated aspen paneling for the interior walls and ceiling and a dark slate, non-slip floor. Aspen bench slatting conceals the building’s diffuse low-level interior light sources, creating a subtle, warm glow in the evening hours.

The sauna provides a whole new way to enjoy life at this traditional summer cottage. An oasis of warmth and tranquility, it fosters communion with fresh air, cool water, and soul-rousing views, while extending the owner’s enjoyment of nature deep into the chillier shoulder seasons.
