Parliament Street Supportive Housing
The transformative rehabilitation of heritage townhouses into supportive housing
The transformative rehabilitation and retrofit project of 504–508 Parliament Street adapts Second Empire-style townhouses into supportive housing for individuals experiencing homelessness. This initiative, led by Dixon Hall Neighbourhood Services in collaboration with Toronto Community Housing (TCHC) and the City of Toronto, provides dignified, supportive housing within a heritage context. The project includes 31 rooms with shared common spaces, creating a balance between privacy and community.
ERA Architects served as lead architect, heritage consultant, and landscape architect, working closely with ARUP Engineers and Dixon Hall. Our approach leveraged the character and integrity of these heritage-listed properties while introducing modern upgrades for safety, comfort, and durability.
The design celebrates the existing architecture while meeting contemporary needs. Rooms feature large operable windows, ensuite washrooms, and custom furnishings to maximize space and light. Common areas, anchored by kitchens designed for shared or individual meals, foster community and support services, including dedicated staff spaces and counselling rooms. Through thoughtful design and collaboration, this project demonstrates how heritage rehabilitation can deliver inclusive, sustainable housing solutions for Toronto’s most vulnerable residents.
