House in the County
A contemporary, landscape-rooted retreat in Prince Edward County
ERA was engaged to design a home that feels rooted in its rural landscape while thoughtfully framing its surroundings. The design process centred on comfort, connection to nature, and the County’s character. Working closely with the homeowner, ERA developed a design that balances privacy with openness to the landscape.
This nearly 3,000-square-foot, two-storey cottage in Prince Edward County was conceived as a serene retreat nestled among the trees, with expansive views of the Bay of Quinte. The pitched roof form, stained wood siding, and dark metal roof reference the vernacular architecture of the County in a contemporary way. In collaboration with the structural engineer, we introduced generous openings that strengthen the home’s connection to the outdoors and draw in natural light. With two bedrooms, a home office, a library, and a state-of-the-art kitchen, the cottage comfortably accommodates weekend living and visiting guests.
The project grew from close collaboration and a shared desire to create a meaningful and deliberately designed home. The result reflects ERA’s ability to craft warm, well‑integrated living environments that fit naturally into their surroundings.
