Clovelly Cottage

Adjacent to the open expanse of Georgian Bay, three modest cabins were dramatically transformed to enhance the qualities of their island setting.

The primary cabin’s kitchen replaced a covered porch dramatically opening the main living space. An addition provided a utility room, washroom, and mudroom, while a timber-framed screened porch, and a large, glazed sitting area were added to facilitate indoor-outdoor living.  New doors, windows, and skylights were added throughout, including large-format sliding doors that capture unobstructed sunset views.

The two remaining bunkhouses were retrofitted to create bright, comfortable, and private sleeping quarters for the large family.

The owners brought a clear aesthetic vision for marrying contemporary glazing, fresh finishes, and an exposed structural system that combined new and existing elements. The freshened architectural qualities of the reimagined cabins exceed the sum of their parts and provide an airy, tranquil, and sheltering ensemble on their picturesque windswept site.
