Big Sound Cottage

Big Sound Cottage

En Français >

Big Sound Rd. winds through rugged Canadian Shield landscape along the eastern edge of Georgian Bay. This house is sited at the crest of a hill along Big Sound, with views looking south and west across the Bay.

ERA was hired to design a house that responded to the Shield landscape, and which took full advantage of the views. The house is a modern shed constructed of raw logs and clad in cedar and glass. The main living spaces, which occupy the upper floor, are arranged to capture light and views. A logia and deep overhang to the south work in concert with radiant-heated, exposed cement floors for passive heating and cooling of the space. A sliding wall is available to separate a suite from the main public areas.
