577 Yonge St
The owner of 577 Yonge Street, KingSett Captial, set out to restore the prominent four-storey, Edwardian-style brick building. The 125-year-old structure has undergone several modifications throughout its history, most notably the removal of the original storefront glazing, the replacement of the fourth-floor windows with unsympathetic vinyl, and the covering of the brick façade with white paint.
A low-impact approach to paint removal was employed, preserving the brick’s patina and protecting the façade from damage. An extensive condition assessment determined that all windows would need to be replaced so historically appropriate wood windows were selected. The two bays were also in poor condition and reconstructed to match the original design.
The successful collaboration between owner, architect, structural engineer, heritage consultant, contractor, and trades delivered an outstanding result.
