Scott Weir is a registered architect, Principal, and Partner at ERA Architects Inc., where he has chaired the firm’s Executive Board since 2018 and has been a member since 2000.

Scott co-leads ERA’s custom residential design studio, which encompasses three portfolios: urban houses, country estates, and lakeside cottages. His work originates in the thoughtful updating and renewal of historic buildings — leveraging their latent potential while making them more comfortable, resilient, and adaptable to contemporary needs, from multi-generational living to aging in place. His portfolio reflects a deep commitment to craft, beauty, comfort, and context, spanning renovations to existing buildings, additions to architecturally significant compounds, and the design of entirely new buildings and compounds for previously undeveloped sites. This work demonstrates a balance of design elegance and technical sophistication, harmonizing modern life within heritage settings and sensitive natural environments. The studio’s approach also extends to design and renovation work for private clubs and hospitality venues, where Scott and his team bring the same attention to atmosphere, experience, and architectural integrity.

Scott also leads a studio focusing on the renewal of major architectural landmarks and the revitalization of neighbourhood-scale developments. His leadership has guided the adaptive reuse of Maple Leaf Gardens into Toronto Metropolitan University’s athletic facility, integrating major retail within the historic site. He directed the heritage component of the Casey House redevelopment, transforming a 19th-century Jarvis Street mansion into a contemporary healthcare facility for people living with HIV and AIDS. Earlier in his career, Scott led the restoration of The Carlu at College Park, and he now oversees ERA’s work on the ambitious redevelopment of that site — completing the historic Yonge Street façade through the construction of a long-planned but unbuilt architectural element and facilitating the addition of new condo and rental housing into this significant building. His work has been recognized with many awards for architectural excellence.

A writer and lecturer as well as a practitioner, Scott’s work and commentary have been published in numerous architectural periodicals. He received formal training in Canada, Italy, and the United Kingdom.

In our Meet the Principals series, Scott discusses ERA’s approach to renewing interesting places.
