The design team for Massey Tower, which includes Hariri Pontarini Architects, ERA Architects, and Cecconi Simone, is pleased to announce that the project was recently honoured with four 2013 BILD Awards:
- Project of the Year
- High-rise Design of the Year
- Best High-rise Sales Office
- Best Model Suite
Central to the project is the conservation and rejuvenation of 197 Yonge St., as well as its careful integration it into the new fabric of Massey Tower, a 60-storey mixed-use development by MOD Developments.
Constructed in 1905 for the Canadian Bank of Commerce, 197 Yonge is an excellent expression of the Beaux-Arts style popular in North America around the turn of the century. Built in brick and Ohio sandstone, the building features an impressive front portico, fine stone masonry, and extensive interior finishings in wood, iron, and tile.
Most of the conservation work for 197 Yonge involves basic repair, restoration, and minor alterations to improve accessibility. The team will be cleaning and repairing stone masonry, adding new sandstone facing in places, improving energy efficiency by double-glazing windows, and cleaning and refurbishing interior elements such as the marble stair, plaster ceilings, and mosaic floor. The result will be a rejuvenated historical space complimented by new construction carefully designed to work harmoniously with this much-loved heritage site.
Thanks to the Building Industry and Land Development Association (BILD) and congratulations to MOD Developments and the rest of the design team!
