This project involved the refurbishment of a two-acre island in the archipelago at Pointe au Baril, Ontario, including the restoration of a historic cottage, bunkie, and landscape. The intent was to edit the overgrown landscape to open views of the water and surroundings.
The main cottage was altered to enlarge the living room and improve the overall circulation, and to light what had previously been a dark interior. The kitchen was overhauled, incorporating the original millwork and shelving while providing a new laundry closet, new appliances, and cupboards faced in salvaged wood to match the rest of the interior. A ground floor bedroom and en suite were carved out of a poorly functioning layout. Interim windows were repaired, moved, or replaced with custom units to match the originals.
Throughout the cottage and site, original features were repaired and incorporated where possible, and a material palette implemented based on traditional Georgian Bay cottage materials and colours.
