Culture of Outports to Botwood, NL

by ERA Architects

The Culture of Outports program is about to start up again, for our very first winter community build, in Botwood, Newfoundland.

Culture of Outports is a series of projects that uses research, design, and planning to make modest interventions that engage with, and help support, livable communities undergoing economic and cultural change after the decline of the Northern Cod Fishery.

In February 2014, team leaders from ERA Architects will be joined by a group of Ryerson students in Botwood, which is located in Notre-Dame Bay, an hour’s drive northwest of Gander. Botwood has a population of roughly 3000,  making it the largest community we have worked with to date.

Over the next three months, we will be collecting data, combing archives, studying maps and development patterns, and examining Botwood’s cultural, military, and industrial histories in hopes of finding inspiration for the build.

Please visit CultureOfOutports.com for more information on this initiative; stay tuned for more updates.
